VENUE DESCRIPTION

In 2011, Crans-Montana celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the first ever timed downhill ski race in history, held on its own Haute Plateau. The large ski area in Switzerland’s canton of Valais has been a player in the alpine skiing scene ever since. The plateau, which sits at 1,500 meters, is also a regular stop on the PGA European golf tour in the summer.

Crans-Montana hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1987 and hosted the 2011 Junior Worlds. The ladies’ World Cup stopped in Crans for speed events in 2010 and 2008 and the men’s European Cup raced all events at the Swiss venue for World Cup Finals in 2009. The men’s World Cup makes its first stop at the Swiss Alps resort with a super-G and giant slalom in February 2012.

Formed by the old mountain villages of Crans-sur-Sierre, Montana and Amino, Crans-Montana is south-facing and famous for its year-round sunshine.
