Sunday in Soelden will be the first Giant Slalom race where the men will be competing on skis compliant with the new FIS specifications (to see an overview of all the details click here).
Over the past several seasons, FIS has undertaken considerable work to find ways to reduce the risk of injury and improve safety. The new specifications were proposed following extensive research and prototype testing conducted in cooperation with SRS, and confirmed by the FIS Council in July 2011.
The new specifications created quite some debate amongst the athletes, but it was decided that the rule changes would be implemented as of the 2012/2013 season.
After a summer of intense work by the athletes to adapt to the new skis, this Sunday will see the first test in competition.
And, who best to explain how the new skis work and what it took to adapt to them than the athletes themselves.
US racer Warren Nickerson took some time over the last months to talk with many of the best athletes in our sport and compiled their feedback and feelings about the new skis into a great video. Check it out here!
