Schladming2013 “Ski Festival with Heart” – 200 days to go
Erich Spiess

Today, 19th July 2012 marked the 200-day milestone for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2013 in Schladming (AUT), scheduled to take place from 4th to 17th February.

To celebrate this occasion, the Schladming2013 Organizing Committee has invited fans to travel the world by carrying a Schladming sticker. Pictures taken with this sticker can be uploaded to the Schladming2013 facebook fan page. The ones hitting the highest number of likes will receive free tickets to some of the events. To get a sticker, contact the Schladming2013 offices at office@schladming2013.at.

Since Schladming was awarded the right to host this event at the FIS Congress 2008 in Cape Town (RSA), the Organizers have invested major efforts in preparing the event. This includes considerable new infrastructure such as the “Sky Gate” which runs over the finish line at the Planai and the Schladming Conference center that will serve as the new media center.

Schladming has staged FIS World Cup competitions since 1973, gaining significant experience. In particular, the FIS World Cup men’s slalom – the Night Race – boasts a special atmosphere with up to 47,000 spectators each year.

As recently confirmed, the nations’ team event will also enjoy the special night atmosphere at Schladming in 2013. The competition will now take place on Tuesday, 12th February 2013 at 17 CET rather than in daylight as has traditionally been the case at previous editions.

In just 200 days, the special Championships will get under way as the ski racing’s season highlight is officially opened. The Swedish legend Anja Pärson who ended her career in Schladming last March 2012 underlined: “For me it was a wonderful ending in Schladming. The finish area is one of its kind; the atmosphere is so special that at the start you cannot wait to get down there! Everything is there for a great festival: The slopes, the mountains, the snow, the sun and the tradition of great skiing. For me the region of Steiermark has been my second home during my last years of racing in the World Cup.”
