The downhill event scheduled for Sunday the 21st of December in St. Moritz has been cancelled due to bad weather.
The ladies World Cup will now move to Semmering in Austria, with two events being held. The Giant Slalom race will be held on Sunday the 28th of December, whilst the Slalom will be on Monday the 29th.
Lindsey Vonn is still leading the overall rankings in the World Cup, although her performance in St. Moritz was quite disappointing. The American failed to complete both the Super Combined discipline on Friday the 19th and the Super G on Saturday the 20th. However despite her poor weekend in Switzerland Lindsey still leads the rankings with 438 points.
Second in the overall rankings is Finnish racer Tanja Poutiainen on 400 points. Tanja did not compete in St.Moritz, and was therefore unable to take advantage of Vonn’s bad weekend.
Maria Riesch is third with 378 points. The German managed to finish fourth in the Super Combined discipline on Friday, but like Vonn failed to finish the Super G race.
The weekend in Switzerland had a fair few surprises, with Anja Paerson returning to winning ways, taking top spot in the Super Combined and fourth spot in the Super G. Paerson’s first win of the season, which moves the Swede up to 5th in the overall rankings on 348 points.
Seventeen year old Lara Gut pulled off the biggest surprise of the weekend when she won the Super G race on Saturday. This was the first World Cup win for the young Swiss athlete, is surely a sign of things to come from the promising teenager. Gut also came fifth in the Super Combined on Friday, and has now moved into the top 10th in the overall rankings on 237 points.
Overall all it was a very positive weekend for the host nation, who not only picked up a win with their rising star, but also saw their skiers finish in the top 10 six times, but also saw 3 podium finishes.
Twenty-three year old Fabienne Suter finished on the podium in both disciplines, with a second place finish in the Super G and a third place finish in the Super Combined. Suter is now 11th overall, on 231 points, and will be looking to keep up her great form in Austria.
