St. Moritz 2017 - World Ski Championships Candidate

After a long two years of candidacy preparation for the 2017 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, one of Switzerland’s most famous resorts St. Moritz, is entering their final candidacy phase with energy and excitement.

  • Why are you a candidate and how many times have you run?

St. Moritz is a candidate because we believe that alpine ski sports can profit from a world know resort and vice-versa. St. Moritz can help to promote alpine skiing by offering its perfect location and facilities not only to the racing community, but also to the needs of visitors and locals alike. It is the third attempt in achieving the goal – a goal not only set by the committee, but by all people in the Engadine Valley and in the city of St. Moritz itself.

  • What makes you different from the others?

Skiing is very similar in every place that can offer great slopes, nice weather, lots of snow and up-to-date facilities. So what makes St. Moritz different from the others? We believe it is its history and aura. Having been a host of two winter Olympic Games, three World Ski Championships, and many other big events on snow, St. Moritz just knows how to handle the challenges of organizing perfectly smooth events and venues. And of course, the altitude (St. Moritz is set at 6’000 feet or 1’800 meters above sea level), the kind weather with a lot of sunshine and abundant snow are just three other reasons that make St. Moritz unique. We believe that the resort itself is different and guarantees spectators, media, sponsors and above all athletes a special experience.

  • What is the core of your bid? What would the Championships at your venue be like and what would people remember in 2027 about them?

The core of our bid is our youth, presented by the next generation. Today’s children will be the ones engaged in the 2017 championships and beyond. They have helped us to prepare this candidacy, looking at it through their eyes.

The event itself will be an unforgettable experience, set in beautiful scenery looking like a winter tale, presenting great ski racing and even greater champions.

As years pass by, people will remember the Championships in St. Moritz as fascinating skiing races with adrenaline rushes, pure emotions and great champions. They will not only remember the past Championships but rather realize that St. Moritz is a resort that does everything to keep up-to-date with its facilities, on the mountain as in the valley. The infrastructure will be well kept and modern, matching the needs of the demanding visitors. And who knows? Maybe people will not only be remembering past Championships but will be dreaming of next ones already …

  • What are your plans for the final phase of your candidacy at the Congress in Korea and what will your booth there feature?

The final phase of the candidacy includes updating all important key people about our project and plans, if not done so yet. Also, getting ready for the long trip to Asia and preparing our goods will keep us busy for a while. At the FIS Congress, St. Moritz will present itself as a true sportsman: fair, but with the clear goal of achieving success. The booth will be a surprise for all participants who remember the previous stands of St. Moritz. No secrets will be relieved today, but it will be a special appearance, one many people would not expect. Therefore, a visit to our booth is a must – we will not disappoint you, as we will not disappoint the skiing family in 2017, when we will stage the Championships.

The election by the FIS Council will take place on 31st May 2012 at the High1 Resort in Kangwonland with the results announced during a reception around 18:30 evening time in South Korea which is approximately 11:30 CET (time difference +7); the announcement ceremony will be streamed live on the FIS websites.
