Finlay Mickel has announced his retirement at the age of 31 because of injury worries.

The Scot native sat out the whole 2007-2008 season due to a long series of injuries, including a fractured left ankle, ruptured right Achilles tendon and a right ankle fracture over the last couple of years.

The speed specialist from Edinburgh entered the British Alpine ski team in 1996, making his World Cup debut four years later.Mickel entered the major circuit for the first time on December 25th, 2000, finishing only 58th in a DH event at Lake Louise, Canada.

His best ever result came in the 2005-2006 season, when he placed 10th in the prestigious Lauberhorn race at Wengen. Mickel ended just outside the Top 10 list at the 2005 World Champs in Bormio.

The Briton won a Europa cup event in the same year, triumphing in the DH event at Roccaraso, Italy.

Fellow Scot Alain Baxter retired a few weeks ago.
