Former World Cup winner Nicole Hosp (AUT) was airlifted from the Sölden course after tearing knee ligaments in the season opening giant slalom in on Saturday.

Hosp crashed in the first run and was flown by helicopter to the bottom of the piste.

"I fell backwards and twisted my knee," Hosp told at the finish before being taken to hospital in Innsbruck. "I felt a pain like someone had stabbed me."

Following reports, she had torn her right knee ligaments and will miss the rest of the Olympic season. Hosp, who was the giant slalom world champion in 2007, missed most of last season after injuring her other knee in January.
