One of the legends of ski racing announced her retirement on Wednesday 19th August.
Renate Goetschl, who had neither confirmed or denied her participation in the 2009/10 season at the end of last winter, has finally decided to call it a day due to the fact that she is pregnant.
The 34-year-old is expecting her first child next spring and declared that she wants to devote all her time now to her private life.
The Austrian speed specialist is third in the World Cup all-time female winners list behind Proell and Schneider with a total of 46 victories. She also won three golds at the World Championships and picked up a silver and a bronze at the Olympics.
Goetschl had been considering ending her career after a disappointing World Championships in Val d’Isère (2009) but the temptation to continue in the hope of grabbing Olympic gold (the only medal missing from her collection) at the Vancouver Games 2010 kept her going.
