ASPEN, Colorado (USA) - Aspen Winternational organizers received approval from the International Ski Federation (FIS) to continue preparations on Aspen Mountain. The Ladies Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup descends on Aspen for two races, namely a giant slalom taking place on Saturday, November 28 and a slalom on Sunday, November 29.
Aspen has emerged from its mining past to become one of the most prestigious US venues for alpine skiing. An all-women’s event was first held in 1998. Poor light rendered the already challenging run even more tricky resulting in only 15 competitors from the large international field to successfully negotiate both races. Overall winner, Anita Wachter was awarded the Bingham Cup, the female equivalent of the Roch Cup which had lain dormant for over a decade.
Aspen is slated to open Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2009. According to the latest snow reports from November 20, Aspen Mountain has received nearly 2 feet of snow in the past few weeks. At the same time temperatures dropped low enough to resume snowmaking. Winter has officially arrived in Aspen / Snowmass and opening day of the ski resort is just around the corner.
Tune in for the Aspen Winternational Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup on November 28-29, 2009!
