PARK CITY, UT (Jan. 29) - The Audi FIS Alpine World Cup charity bib auctions are coming to a close Saturday with the action and numbers on the rise. An initiative created by the athletes, all proceeds from the auction will go toward the earthquake relief effort in Haiti.
Up for grabs are individually signed men's race bibs from the 70th running of the famed Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbuehel, Austria at www.ebay.at and signed women's bibs at www.ebay.com from this season's World Cup classis super G Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
About half the Cortina auctions end early Saturday morning with the rest late afternoon. Half of the Kitzbuehel bibs closing out mid-day Saturday as well, while second group willl lock down mid-day Sunday.
Hahnenkamm winner Didier Cuche of Switzerland carries the highest cash total so far with over $16,000 raised from 65 bids. Two-time overall World Cup champion Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) leads the numbers for Americans with nearly $2,100 posed for his top 10 placing bib.
Two-time World Champion and Cortina super G winner Lindsey Vonn's (Vail, CO) bib leads the women's numbers chase at $3,300 pledged over 64 bids. Olympic gold medalist Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA), who spearheaded the auction, has a bib currently at $405.
Both auctions close throughout the day Saturday with the earliest shutting down just after midnight Eastern. All money raised from the auction will be sent to assist in rebuilding the earthquake torn country of Haiti.
