Following the retirement from the world of skiing by his sister Janica, Ivica Kostelic continues to carry the family name proudly forward as Croatia's top Alpine skier, confirmed by being crowned his nation's best skier for season 2007/08. The elder brother of one of the greatest female skiers of all-time started his career displaying a vast promise, accumulating considerable success in junior competition despite the family finding makeshift accommodation in tents or even in the car while travelling the length and breadth of Europe as Croatia's fledging government organised the newly declared independent state , and his success has continued since graduating to the senior circuit, exemplified by being the first skier from his country to be world champion.
